Much of Hollywood\u2019s Golden Age was played out in this house and Ford, probably best known for his Westerns, was Hollywood\u2019s No. 1 box office leading man and heartthrob. Celebrities hung out here, parties were lavish and wild, you came to see and be seen. This was Hollywood the way it used to be, and probably minus copious amounts of white powdery substances.<\/p>\n<p>Glenn Ford died in 2006 and his son Peter, who moved in with his aging dad several years before so that the actor could spend his final days at home, just put the home on the market for $7,995,000.<\/p>\n<p>Peter recalls parties in this house with <strong>Cary Grant, Rita Hayworth, Gregory Peck<\/strong> and <strong>Frank Sinatra<\/strong> in attendance. \u201cEverybody came through,\u201d he says, \u201c<strong>John Wayne, Ava Gardner<\/strong>, Sophie Tucker, Noel Coward, George Kennedy, William Holden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up in the epicenter of Hollywood\u2019s Golden Age, but for me, it was all I knew. Today, I look back and go \u2018Wow!\u2019 but while it was going on, it was just normal for me.\u201d Normal was sitting on <strong>Mary Pickford<\/strong>\u2019s lap and being taken by mom Eleanor Powell over to <strong>Fred Astaire<\/strong>\u2019s for lunch. I like it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newwebdev.wordpress-developer.us\/hauteresidence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Ford2.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-481\" title=\"Ford2\" src=\"https:\/\/newwebdev.wordpress-developer.us\/hauteresidence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Ford2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"639\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwebdev.wordpress-developer.us\/hauteresidence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Ford2.jpg 639w, https:\/\/newwebdev.wordpress-developer.us\/hauteresidence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Ford2-300x154.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 639px) 100vw, 639px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So why isn\u2019t Peter Ford\u2014a distinguished builder of custom homes, including <strong>Frank Gehry\u2019s Schnabel House<\/strong>\u2014just remodeling his Dad\u2019s place? Perhaps too many memories and perhaps a simple truth: This isn\u2019t your father\u2019s Beverly Hills any more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeverly Hills has changed. It\u2019s no longer the small town it once was,\u201d Ford says. Hard to imagine Beverly Hills as a small town, albeit one filled with celebrities at every corner?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what made it so special to be here,\u201d Ford says.\u00a0 Celebrities were neighbors, friends of the family, the folks you ran into at the local watering holes.<\/p>\n<p>Ford\u2019s framed collection of more than 150 signed autographs decorates one wall of this 8,500-square-foot mid-century. The home was designed by New York architect Robert Lazier with a \u201cwhole lot of input\u201d from Glenn Ford.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, there are very few 90-degree corners in the house and in the master bedroom suite alone, there are 22 different angles. It was a metaphoric way to say, \u201cDon\u2019t box me in,\u201d Ford said of his father\u2019s design insistence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newwebdev.wordpress-developer.us\/hauteresidence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Ford31.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-483\" title=\"Ford31\" src=\"https:\/\/newwebdev.wordpress-developer.us\/hauteresidence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Ford31.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"639\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newwebdev.wordpress-developer.us\/hauteresidence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Ford31.jpg 639w, https:\/\/newwebdev.wordpress-developer.us\/hauteresidence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Ford31-300x154.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 639px) 100vw, 639px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Glenn Ford\u2019s romantic liaisons are well documented, including by his son who has written a book about his father\u2019s life. Long-time girlfriend Rita Hayworth bought the lot next door and, in a Peyton Place maneuver, built her home on it. The two starred in five movies together.<\/p>\n<p>There was also the painting that Peter Ford found after his father\u2019s death that detailed a night spent with Marilyn Monroe. It occurred on the evening Glenn Ford presented her with a Golden Globe for leading actress for her role in <em>Some Like it Hot<\/em>. As Ford tells it, the after-awards party was at \u201cDad\u2019s place\u201d and Monroe entered the home and was immediately mesmerized by this particular painting. Much Champagne flowed and they spent the night together, but much to Monroe\u2019s disappointment, the painting was not gifted to her come morning. She left and the painting stayed.
