With <\/span>198 galleries from 31 countries, the Armory Show<\/a> draws more than 60,000 attendees each year. <\/span>The show, which is no longer at the Armory on the Upper East Side but at the dramatically different West Side Piers 92\/94, fills <\/span>208,000 square feet with extraordinary 20th- and 21st-century art.\u00a0There\u00a0are two days left of the Armory Show<\/a>—\u00a0the art (and the “scene”) are well worth the visit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are the most exciting pieces this year.<\/p>\n

\"IMG_0326\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Montreal <\/span>Parisian Laundry Gallery<\/span><\/a> opens the show (it is literally the first stall you encounter) with a stunning exhibit from <\/span>Gabriele Beveridge<\/span><\/a>. \u201c<\/span>By isolating, juxtaposing, layering and ultimately recontextualizing objects including found images, shop fittings, semi-precious stones and hand blown glass, the artist is able to rupture and rearrange the conventional staging of attraction and desire. These visual strategies work less to dismantle conventions of the beautiful than to exaggerate them to a point where they are made alien, initiating a fluctuation between the attractive and the unfamiliar.”<\/span><\/p>\n

This enormously powerful charcoal drawing (enormous both in power and size: 101 x 120 inches) by <\/span>Robert Longo<\/span><\/a> is in <\/span>Galerie Thaddeus Ropac\u2019s <\/span><\/a>booth. The Brooklyn artist\u2019s use of charcoal expresses great depth and realism on such a massive scale.<\/span><\/p>\n

Swiss gallery <\/span>Cortesi<\/span><\/a>\u00a0highlights Belgian artist\u00a0<\/span>Wayne LeBlanc\u2019s<\/span><\/a> Mobilio-Statique <\/em>which\u00a0is anything but static. Made with polyvinyl shards, the black and yellow dynamic art move with the viewer\u2019s movements. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A huge crowd gathers around Spanish artist <\/span>Nacho Carbonell\u2019<\/span><\/a>s lit sculptures, highlighted in <\/span>Carpenters Workshop Gallery<\/span><\/a>\u2019s first-ever Armory show booth. Carbonell\u2019s sculptures, made of metal mesh, stone and concrete look like coral on the ocean floor. About his creations, Carbonell <\/span>says, <\/span>\u201cI like to see objects as living organisms, imagining them coming alive and being able to surprise you with their behaviour.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Pace Gallery<\/a>‘s<\/span> display of\u00a0<\/span>Tara Donovan<\/span><\/a>\u2019s massive installation is made from clear plastic tubes of varying heights that fill a space the size of an airplane hanger. Shaped into a wedge, Donovan uses a single material to play on light and edge that seem to expand to infinity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Photographer <\/span>JR\u2019<\/span><\/a>s \u201cSo Close\u201d exhibit, shown by <\/span>Jeffrey Deitch<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> displays life-sized translucent images of Ellis Island immigrants waiting in line.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jose Carlos Martinat\u2019s <\/span>Distractor IV<\/span><\/i> is a spinning, turning sculpture made with <\/span>LEDs, motors, microcontrollers, collectors, wood, aluminum and iron. <\/span><\/p>\n

Galerie Ron Mandos<\/span><\/a>\u2019 display of <\/span>Mohau Modisakeng\u2019<\/span><\/a>s photography series <\/span>Zion <\/span><\/i>draws viewers in. The artist\u2019s use of material, metaphor and the black body symbolize South Africa\u2019s violent history and how we understand our cultural, political, and social roles as human beings in post-colonial Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n

Amsterdam gallery <\/span>Upstream<\/span><\/a>, showcased Dutch artist\u2019s <\/span>Constant Dullaart\u2019<\/span><\/a>s. Dullaart\u2019s <\/span>PVA Composition <\/span><\/i>is made with hundreds of \u201cfake\u201d phone sim cards pasted on a mirror and on photos of the Battle of Saratoga. The art symbolizes a \u201cfake army to stand up in the war against the current American social media revolution and the false validation system in journalism based on follower counts.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The crowd pleasing<\/span> My Turn<\/span><\/i><\/a>, a work by <\/span>Edward Cella Art and Architecture<\/span><\/a>\u2019s Alex Schweder and Ward Shelley, showcase the men taking turns sitting in the tiny ferris wheel. Tired show-goers taking a break on the nearby couches are amused by the show.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two galleries showcase works by Yayoi Kusama, whose <\/span>garden of red-and-white polka-dotted penis sculptures drew a lot of attention at last year\u2019s Armory show. This year\u2019s Kusama displays are much more tame. The Omer Tricohe Gallery shows Kusama’s rare works on paper.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pierogi Gallery<\/span><\/a> draws crowds with <\/span>The Pink Forest<\/span><\/i>, a diorama by <\/span>Patrick Jacobs<\/span><\/a>. The pink explosion is made with styrene, acrylic, cast neoprene, paper, hair, polyurethane foam, ash, talc, starch, acrylite, vinyl film, copper, wood, steel, lighting, BK7 glass.<\/span><\/p>\n
