For the first time in history, the longtime Newport, Rhode Island residence of Eileen G. Slocum, a known political hostess, is on the market for $5,900,000, Mansion Global <\/em>reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 19th Century estate, named “Harold Brown Villa,\u201d was designed by Dudley Newton in 1880, with updates by Ogden Codman, the listing states<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"Rhode<\/a><\/p>\n

Sited on nearly 5 acres of park-like grounds, the 13,962-square-foot, gated home, designed in a classical French Empire style, was built for Harold Brown, a member of the family who founded Brown University. Slocum, a Brown family descendant, inherited the house in the 1960s from her aunt.<\/p>\n

\"Rhode<\/a><\/p>\n

On the first floor of the 11-bedroom, 11-bathroom, stone residence, there is a reception hall, a great room, an observatory, two libraries, a sitting room, and a formal dining room.<\/p>\n

The second floor is accessed through the great room by a curved staircase, or by the elevator. This floor features a master bedroom, as well as additional bedrooms and bathrooms.<\/p>\n

\"Rhode<\/a><\/p>\n

Slocum, who died in 2008 at 92 years old, was an active member of the Republican party. She hosted fundraisers and other political events at the estate, with appearances by prominent political figures, including former presidents, John F. Kennedy and Gerald R. Ford; former vice president, Dick Cheney; and former senator Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina.<\/p>\n
