33\u00a0remarkable and innovative buildings received the top awards at the 2014 World Architecture Festival<\/a> in Singapore earlier this month. Over the course of this massive design competition, a list of 400 projects\u2014including future designs and completed building\u2014spanning 50 countries was pared down to a mere few dozen designs across 27 categories.<\/p>\n

The following five completed structures are some of the most outstanding winners from this year\u2019s festival.<\/p>\n

#1: Best House<\/h3>\n

The festival awarded House for Trees<\/strong> in Vietnam as the world\u2019s \u201cBest House.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"1_Best<\/a><\/p>\n

Vo Trong Nghia Architects<\/strong>\u00a0was inspired by the startling amount of greenery covering Ho Chi Minh City (only 0.25 percent) and designed these simple, yet exquisite structures as a nod to the area\u2019s roots as a tropical forest. Interestingly, the houses dually function as both residences and \u201cpots\u201d for rooftop trees.<\/p>\n

#2: Best Housing<\/h3>\n

Taking top honors in the \u201cBest Housing\u201d category was The Carve<\/strong> by Norwegian firm A-Lab<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The intriguing fa\u00e7ade appears \u201ccarved-out\u201d of the building\u2019s superbly-angled structure\u2014a design feature that allows for optimal light. The building is one of seven comprising the city of Oslo\u2019s waterfront \u201cBarcode Project,\u201d which guarantees regulated green areas. It is also part the soon-to-be \u201cOpera Quarter\u201d within the city\u2019s up-and-coming Central Business District.<\/p>\n

#3: Best Villa<\/h3>\n

Dune House<\/strong> by Fearon Hay<\/strong> received the highest accolades in the \u201cBest Villa\u201d category.<\/p>\n

Located on the east coast of New Zealand\u2019s North Island, about an hour outside of Auckland, Dune House features a sophisticated, yet non-intrusive design that blends in well within its surroundings: a natural dune zone along a popular, white sand beach. It currently serves as a private home.<\/p>\n

#4: Best New and Old<\/h3>\n

The best transformation from past to present went to Chinese architecture studio Neri&Hu<\/strong> for the firm’s\u00a0design of Rethinking the Split House<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"4_Best<\/a><\/p>\n

Its\u00a0renovation of a dilapidated 1930s townhouse in Shanghai scored them top honors in the \u201cBest New and Old\u201d category. What was once a single-family house is now a split-level series of three different luxury apartments. The most awe-inspiring feature of the rehabilitated structure is the rear wall of the three-story building, which was sliced away and replaced with glass.<\/p>\n

#5: Best Hotel and Leisure<\/h3>\n

Son La Restaurant<\/strong> by Vo Trong Nghia<\/strong> was named world\u2019s \u201cBest Hotel.\u201d<\/p>\n

When it comes to eco-friendly designs, Vietnam appears to be paving the way, especially with\u00a0this not-so-typical restaurant. The entire project maximized use of local resources, including workers and materials such as bamboo and stonework. It is built to withstand monsoons and the hot, humid temperatures that are typical of the area.<\/p>\n
