Credited for giving birth to swing, big bandleader and jazz clarinetist, Benny \u201cKing of Swing\u201d Goodman, is considered to have been a trailblazer throughout his lifelong music career. During the years he played in Los Angeles, Goodman owned this 1928 Spanish-style home in the Palisades Riviera area. On a third of an acre on tree-lined streets, the home has been updated to current expectations, while preserving the original details, such as vaulted-beamed ceilings, original arched windows, wood-burning fireplaces, and Spanish tile stair risers in the curving rotunda stairs with intricate wrought iron railing. Also preserved are the detailed molding and period light fixtures.\u00a0Added to the 5,000-square-foot, five-bedroom, six-bathroom home are formal rooms, a family room, a large gourmet kitchen with breakfast room, a study\/office, and an outdoor living area with summer kitchen and swimming pool. The separate guest house is currently being used as a music studio. The “King of Swing”\u2019s former Palisades Rivera, Los Angeles home, originally $45,000 when built in 1928, is now priced at $6.195 million.<\/p>\n

#2:\u00a0California Paint Mountain Auction<\/a><\/h1>\n

This California tri-level estate on the highest stand-alone pinnacle of Paint Mountain in San Diego County was the brainchild and design of a wealthy physician, inventor, and investor.\u00a0The 360-degree views overlook the Elfin Forest and Escondido to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and practically the entirety of southern California.\u00a0The main highlights are the large open courtyard with glass walls that can be opened with a touch of a button and the 288,000-gallon lap pool that begins in the central courtyard and has a spa and swim-up bar\u2013\u2013with submerged stools\u2013\u2013that continues out through the more than 18 acres. During its construction, the best materials and craftsmen were brought in from all over the world, garnering much curiosity from distant neighbors below who made the drive up the mountainside to observe the progress of the build.<\/p>\n

Consisting of 23,000 square feet, the home has three living levels, eight bedrooms, 11 baths, a massive 10-inch by 10-inch revolving entry door, a theater, an entertainment room, a fitness center, an executive office, and a commercial-grade kitchen featuring its own Teppanyaki station.\u00a0To assure that each dinner guest has equal enjoyment of the views, the formal dining room floor slowly rotates throughout the meal. There is also a prep kitchen adjacent to the main kitchen and a wine cellar with a tasting area. Garage parking on the lower level can accommodate up to 20 vehicles.\u00a0A detached 1,200-square-foot unfinished guest house adds another two bedrooms and two baths.\u00a0San Diego County\u2019s most unique mansion is now going to the highest bidder at or above $5 million.<\/p>\n

#3:\u00a0Connecticut’s ‘Stillman House’<\/a><\/h1>\n

Located just off of Litchfield Green, an area of town with Congregational churches, restaurants, shops, and residential buildings, the 2,359-square-foot “Stillman House” by Marcel Breuer is now for sale. Completely restored to its former glory, the\u00a0cantilevered, two-story, oblong house was built of cinderblock and wood with large windows allowing a connection to nature, typical of Breuer’s style at the time. The exterior, which has also been carefully restored, was made up of multicolored rectangles above a modernist wall mural designed by artist Alexander Calder.\u00a0The four-bedroom, two-bathroom home features hardwood flooring on both levels. The flat-roofed home also has floating staircases, two fireplaces, a guesthouse, a pool, and a porch. The Stillman House is priced at $2.495 million.<\/p>\n

#4:\u00a0Lake Placid Log Cabin<\/a><\/h1>\n

In the 1920s, this Benjamin Muncil-designed, charming log cabin at the tip of Long Island, New York, was built. That cabin was relocated to the shores of Lake Placid in 2001 on a six-acre, 1,000-foot shoreline and restored, adding heated floors, baths, and kitchen blended into its original character. The four-bedroom, four-bathroom cabin has a large floor-to-peak granite fireplace, a library loft, an eat-in kitchen for six, and a screened lakeside porch with outdoor kitchen, fireplace, lounging, and dining space. The large, enclosed boathouse has three interior slips with plenty of extra dock space at the pier. There is also a game\/entertainment room and meditation room on the upper floor. This historic log cabin and boathouse on the shores of the Adirondacks\u2019 Lake Placid is priced at $4.25 million.<\/p>\n

#5:\u00a0Lake Tahoe Twin Pines Log Cabin<\/a><\/h1>\n

Built in 1928, the 2,720-square-foot home is rustic but with elegant interior details and has vaulted open-beamed pine ceilings, three bedrooms, four baths, and a massive rock fireplace with views over the lake and private pier. The 864-square-foot guest house has a great room with fireplace, a kitchen, one bedroom, and two baths. The property has 180 feet of sandy beachfront with a pier and buoy, and borders Edgewood Championship Golf Course. Located in Lake Tahoe, just walking distance away from the lake area\u2019s gondola, casinos, restaurants, and hiking and biking trails, this property is priced at $8.995 million.<\/p>\n
