Nowadays, the terms\u00a0“bigger”\u00a0and “better” are more often than not deemed\u00a0synonymous.\u00a0There are, of course, many exceptions to this generalization, though arguably few can be found in the world of architecture and design.<\/p>\n

Read on for a few sample residences around the world that exemplify\u00a0how\u00a0a little bit of space can\u00a0go\u00a0a surprisingly\u00a0long way (you just have to be incredibly\u00a0open-minded\u2014and an utter non-hoarder\u2014to truly appreciate their compact\u00a0brilliance and beauty).<\/p>\n

#1:\u00a0Jakub Szcz\u0119sny\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0Keret House<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Behold: the world’s slimmest home.<\/p>\n

Though classified as an “art installation” for failing\u00a0to meet Polish building codes, Jakub Szcz\u0119sny\u2019s Keret House is\u00a0remarkably only 122 centimeters (about four feet) across at its widest point.<\/p>\n

Named after Israeli writer Etgar Keret<\/strong>\u00a0(with whom\u00a0Szcz\u0119sny developed the triangular structure), Keret House\u00a0is a fully functioning residence\u2014one seriously fit for only\u00a0super slender\u00a0and non-claustrophobic folks.\u00a0A two-story iron structure that inhabits the space between two historically opposing buildings\u2014a brick building left over from before World War II, and a modern concrete apartment building built after the conflict\u2014the peculiar property stands out amidst the city’s pre-war landscape.<\/p>\n

The severely strait body of the house\u00a0is raised up on stilts, and a retractable staircase used for entrance becomes the living area when closed. The razor-thin\u00a0abode, whose interior is entirely painted white, also contains a bedroom, kitchen, and a bathroom.\u00a0The kitchen can only accommodate a two-beverage refrigerator, and a ladder is used to get from floor to floor. While its two windows do not open, sunshine pours through the walls, which are made of translucent glass panels.<\/p>\n

“We deeply believe it will become a symbol of modern Warsaw ingrained in its complicated history,” said\u00a0Sarmen Beglarian<\/strong>\u00a0alongside fellow curator\u00a0Sylwia Szymaniak<\/strong>, both\u00a0<\/strong>of\u00a0whom\u00a0are members of the\u00a0Polish Modern Art Foundation.<\/p>\n

This “shippable”\u00a0home in New York City’s West Village measures in at just 320 square feet, and\u00a0is\u00a0made up of 70% recycled material.<\/p>\n

Sitting on the corner of Charles and Washington streets, the highly\u00a0creative, prefabricated MEKA Home\u00a0<\/strong>designed by architects Jason Halter<\/strong> and Christos Marcopoulous\u00a0<\/strong>is incredibly economical, costing just $100 per square foot.<\/p>\n

#3: Boyarsky Murphy Architects’ Sliver\u00a0House<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Sandwiched between two terraced homes\u00a0in West London, this four-story, three-bedroom abode is situated on a wedge-shaped lot, measuring\u00a010 feet in the front and\u00a0nearly 25 feet at its rear.<\/p>\n

Outfitted with tinted glass, the residence’s frontage was designed to maximize natural light while maintaining privacy. Well placed skylights and rear windows also bring in light to the narrow home.<\/p>\n

#4: Micro Mini\u00a0Livable Cube<\/h2>\n

Fit for up to two people, the Micro Compact Home<\/a>\u2014”m-ch,” for short\u2014is shaped in the form of a neat cube that’s only about 77\u00a0square feet.\u00a0

Inspired by the small\u00a0scale of a Japanese teahouse and the compact efficiency of a smart automobile, the minimal abode was conceptualized by a team\u00a0of English and German researchers who\u00a0sought to create<\/span>\u00a0a temporary living space for students,\u00a0<\/span>businesspeople, and weekenders alike.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Built on the mantra “less is more,” the micro-sized home has gained serious\u00a0traction in Europe, where it can cost\u00a0up to\u20ac90,000\u2014roughly $120,000\u2014to install, depending on infrastructure and landscaping fees.<\/p>\n
